Greek Revival Period Homes (1820-1860)

Greek Revival architecture is a style that began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in the United States as well as in Greece itself following its independence in 1832.  Modern-day architects are recreating this design by building houses similar to the Greek Revival. These houses are characterized by their symmetrical and balanced proportions, typically featuring a bold, pedimented portico with arched openings. The symmetrical façade is divided into two equal halves.

A personal favorite of mine is the Selmar Eggers building in historic downtown New Bedford.
